A skill development and vocational training centre has been designed for rural communities around Barmer, as part of the client’s CSR activities. The programme is an interesting mix of traditional skill training (like embroidery and stitching) with digital technical training. Akin to BPOs, offline knowledge processing can now move to rural communities.
The design is simple and planned around a courtyard. A low, horizontal solid form with punctures provided for heating and ventilation. The central courtyard also doubles up as an open air theatre. Classrooms and a computer lab for adult education are designed around this courtyard. In order to complete the entire skilling and employment chain, a counseling room and a placement & entrepreneurship cell were crucial to the success of the project.
The hot arid climate of the region is a key determinant of the design. Solar passive design provides us with approaches to combat the heat that are tried and tested. Translucent stone has been used instead of glass in order to cut out heat. Vernacular materials and techniques like random rubble masonry and stone tile roofing have been employed in our design.
